Exploring Amsterdam Art Week
A journey through the city's cultural landscape
During Amsterdam Art Week the capital city transforms into an international art oasis, where art lovers, collectors, artists, and art professionals are immersed for five days in all the exciting and innovative offerings of the contemporary Amsterdam art scene. The driving force behind this event? The Amsterdam Art Foundation.
The Amsterdam Art Foundation aims to promote the future of contemporary art in the cultural capital Amsterdam, with the goal of making art accessible. During Amsterdam Art Week, over 50 locations in Amsterdam participate in this event: museums and galleries organize special exhibitions, private collectors open their homes to show their collection to the public, and art-loving venues experiment with art-related programs. And because Pillows Hotel Maurits at the Park is known for its beautiful modern and contemporary art collection, participation in the Amsterdam Art Week program is a natural fit.
On Saturday, 3 June , Pillows, in collaboration with Amsterdam Art Week and Harper's Bazaar, will organize a "Women in Art" event. There will be a tour of female artists from the Pillows collection, followed by a lecture on the position of female artists in the contemporary art world.
Especially for this event, Pillows’ bar manager Nick Vrielink, who is also the Dutch champion for the IBA World Cocktail Championship, has created a cocktail inspired by the artwork "The Brethren of The Stone" by artist Jen Liu.
Floris van Straalen, chef restaurant Van Oost, has created a five-course menu especially for Amsterdam Art Week, inspired by 5 different works of art from the hotel. This will be served during a private VIP dinner.
Other highlights during Amsterdam Art Week are:
- Annet Gelink Gallery presents the new solo exhibition of British artist Ryan Gander. The exhibition is a collection of new and older works and is about Gander's conceptual biases with Absence and Time.
- GRIMM Gallery presents a solo exhibition by photographer Francesca Mollett. Moved by the power of painting, Mollett wants to enter into a dialogue with the viewer and deconstruct their prejudices. In this way she connects us with the brilliant and ghostly patterns that we often miss in everyday life.
- Akinci Gallery presents Sleep in Witness, a new solo exhibition by South African sculptor Lungiswa Gqunta. Gqunta examines the containment of African knowledge systems and sees this lack as a symptom of colonial history and conquest.
