The most picturesque city walk through Zwolle

Zwolle-10.jpg

The beautiful city centre of Zwolle deserves to be discovered, but where to find that one narrow street or that photogenic bridge? This is our favourite city walk through the centre of Zwolle.

The most charming bridges

Zwolle’s city centre has about 6 kilometres of city canals and has, therefore, countless bridges. The Vispoortbrug (brug means bridge in Dutch), a photogenic drawbridge, is one of them and also the place where our walk will start. The second bridge that we immediately fall in love with is the Pelserbrugje. A cute pedestrian bridge named after the 15th-century fur workers (pelsers). Since 1974 it has connected the city centre with the Thorbeckegracht, moreover at the request of the residents. They felt isolated from the city centre and built the bridge at their own expense.

Bonbonnerie Borrel as a must-have stopover

If we keep following the canal, we cross the Diezenpoort bridge for a short stop at Bonbonnerie Borrel. Upon entering, you will be welcomed by the scent of delicious bonbons and Zwolle truffles, which are traditionally prepared with sustainably grown cocoa.

Zwolle houses and lovely streets

When we turn the corner at Kerkstraat, we see Zwolle's houses and the fountain of the Van Nahuyspark, when the famous Sassenpoort, the only remaining city gate, looms up. From the Sassenpoort you would almost miss out on the Kromme Jak. A shame, as it is one of the most beautiful streets in the city with its medieval ambience.

After the Bethlehem Church, we find the noble residence Hof van Ittersum on the corner of the Sassenstraat. Inhabited in 1571 by the influential Van Ittersum family, who named the house after Charles V. "His head" can be found at the top of the house.

After the Big Church we walk to Museum De Fundatie (lovers of narrow streets with beautiful houses should make a short detour via the Fratersteeg). This neoclassical former Palace of Justice shows visual art and is the pride of Zwolle. The futuristic roof was added in 2013 and deserves to be admired.
