About Art

About Art is responsible for picking all of the art pieces hanging in all Pillows Hotels. With more than 6000 pieces of art in their collection and the urge to show art things can be done differently, they have what it takes to turn a standard room into an atmospheric one with the right tone.

Empty walls but a mind full of ideas

Even when the walls of the Pillows Hotels are still grey, and the project is nowhere near being finished, the team of About Art gets together with the interior architect to discuss every little detail of the design: the colors of the sofa and floor, the texture of the wall and curtains, nothing will be left unspoken to envision everything.

With a mind full of mental pictures, the team strolls a full day through the depot along rack cabinets full of art wear. Sometimes with a specific piece in their mind, other times being surprised by hidden gems. During the selection, About Art tries to find contemporary works to create an interesting contrast with the historical character of the Pillows properties. And they dare to be picky. If there is not a single piece out of thousands of artworks to match a specific space, they will purchase something outside of their own collection. Diversity is key to appeal each guest.

Putting exceptional pieces of a puzzle together

After going through the depot, the creative part starts. The selected pieces from the depot are printed in mini-sized versions and are being shifted back and forth on the printed floor plans. A photograph or a sketch in the Living? It can take several days to decide which pieces matches each room and which wall best. First they start with the hotel rooms, where small rooms are decorated with one or two pieces and the suites up to six works of art. Each space receives the same amount of attention as even the bathrooms are not left behind. As every hotel room gets their own pieces of art, they slowly work towards the common areas like the Living and the restaurants.

Creating contract

When all the art has been selected, each piece of art will be hung on the intended wall. But this does not mean that it has founds its definitive home yet. Even then About Art can change a lot of the works there, taking everything into account: when do people open their curtains, how does the light shines into the room, how high is the ceiling and how does the work look from different angles. Absolutely nothing escapes their gaze, including the final frame check with Glassex in the hand to give them a final polish.
