Beyond Amsterdam: 5 Favourite Day Trips from Concierge Joram
When visiting Amsterdam, you’ll discover a city rich in history, culture and understated elegance. But sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found just outside its borders. Our concierges are experts in uncovering those special places — close enough for a day trip, far enough to see a different side of the Netherlands. In this blog, Joram Hoekstra, concierge at Pillows Hotels Maurits at the Park, shares his favourite escapes beyond the city to enrich your stay.
“Amsterdam is, of course, beautiful with its canals, world-famous museums and lively neighbourhoods. But if you venture just a little further, you’ll find towns and villages where history, tradition and Dutch charm come to life in unforgettable ways. Each one is within an hour’s reach, making them ideal for a day trip during your visit. These are five of my personal favourites.”
Zaandam – Industrial heritage with character
“Just 15 minutes away, Zaandam offers a striking mix of old and new. Colourful wooden houses, windmills along the water, and bold modern architecture in between. At the open-air museum Zaanse Schans, it feels like stepping straight into Dutch history — with clogs, cheese, craftsmanship and stories that reflect our roots.”
Broek in Waterland, Edam, Volendam & Marken – Villages from a postcard
“Some Dutch villages feel like time has stood still. In Broek in Waterland, you stroll past pastel-coloured homes and quiet lanes. Edam is all about cheese and heritage. Volendam is bustling, with its harbour and fishing boats. And on Marken, wooden houses whisper tales of the past. Four distinct atmospheres, all nearby.”
Delft – Tranquillity, history and a touch of blue
“Delft is a must-visit. You’ll think of Delft Blue, but also its serene canals and the impressive Nieuwe Kerk, with the final resting place of William of Orange. I always recommend visiting Museum Prinsenhof and the Vermeer Museum. It’s a city best explored on foot, where past and present flow effortlessly together.”
Leiden – Stories on every corner
“Leiden has so many layers. It’s Rembrandt’s birthplace, home to the Netherlands’ oldest university, and full of hidden courtyards and world-class museums. For me, the Hortus Botanicus is one of the most peaceful places in the country, a garden of centuries-old plants and quiet stories.”
The Hague – Seaside elegance
“A city of grandeur. Palaces, embassies, renowned museums and then, suddenly: the beach. I often guide guests to the Mauritshuis to see Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, followed by a walk around the Binnenhof, and finally a breath of sea air in Scheveningen. There’s always a sense of holiday in the breeze.”
